SAP Calculations

To comply with the building regulations newly constructed dwellings require energy calculations to be completed in order to demonstrate compliance. The methodology used to calculate a dwellings energy efficiency is known as the Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP).

The SAP rating is calculated using the following information all of which are offset against any renewable energy technologies utilised.

  • materials used for construction of the dwelling
  • thermal insulation of the building fabric
  • ventilation characteristics of the dwelling and ventilation equipment
  • efficiency and control of the heating system(s)
  • solar gains through openings of the dwelling
  • the fuel used to provide space and water heating
  • ventilation and lighting

The SAP is expressed on a scale of 1 - 100, 1 represents a poor standard of high running cost while a SAP of 100 represents zero energy costs. Our SAP calculations are fully compliant with the Building Regulations and may be presented to any Building Control Office to prove that the dwelling has achieved the required standard. The SAP calculations include the Environmental Impact rating, Dwelling Emission rating and Target Emission Rating which are all used to demonstrate how efficient the dwelling is. If the dwelling does not meet the required standard, we will advise our clients of the necessary adjustments which they need to make in order to improve the dwellings energy efficiency and achieve compliance.
